Getting bandages to stick to the skin can sometimes be difficult, especially if the skin is wet. However, this problem does not exist with an experimental new wound dressing that uses ultrasound-induced microbubbles to better bind to the skin.
The dressing itself, developed by a team led by Canada's McGill University, comes in the form of a sheet of clear hydrogel - made of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) polymer and an alginate gel derived from seaweed. The hydrogel is combined with a liquid substrate coating containing chitosan or gelatin nanoparticles or cellulose nanocrystals.
Whatever the combination, once the underlying paint and hydrogel are applied to the wound, a small ultrasonic sensor makes contact with them. Ultrasonic waves pass through the hydrogel and induce cavitation in the underlying paint, creating many microbubbles that push the underlying paint molecules down into the skin.
As a result, the dressing sticks to the skin better than traditional adhesive bandages -- the stronger the ultrasound, the better the adhesive. Once the wound heals, the bonding process can be reversed to remove the hydrogel.
As well as being used for wound treatment, it is believed the technology could also be used to deliver drugs through the skin...... And the possibilities don't end there.
Lead scientist Professor Jianyu Li, of McGill University, said: "By fusing mechanics, materials and biomedical engineering, we envision a broad impact of our bioadhesion technology in wearable devices, wound management and regenerative medicine."
A paper on the research was recently published in the journal Science. Scientists from the University of British Columbia and ETH Zurich in Switzerland also took part in the study.
